課程概述

Composition II is a year-long course that focuses on writing full-length essays. To set the foundation for academic writing, four important skills – summarizing, evaluating, synthesizing, and arguing – will be closely examined, discussed, and put into practice in the first semester. The course will be delivered in a range of formats, including lectures, workshops, and supervisions, all of which involve your active participation and critical engagement with your own writing, your peers, and your instructor. Additionally, the course will also provide opportunities for you to explore the role of these skills in different types of writing professions.

Note: 1) The course will be primarily conducted in English; 2) Topics discussed in this course will lean more towards the social sciences than the arts & humanities. Referencing in all course assignments will follow APA style.

課程目標
By the end of this course you will:
- Be more confident in engaging with – and responding to – different academic texts.
- Develop skills in summarizing, evaluating, synthesizing, and arguing.
- Be able to apply these skills in writing full-length essays.
- Expand your understanding about the role of these skills in different types of professions that involve writing.

1.
Attendance and participation
25%
This includes weekly assignments that will be shared and discussed in class. Attendance is mandatory. If you will not be able to attend a class please e-mail the instructor as early as possible. Too many absences will hurt your final grade.
2.
Four compositions
60%
On summarizing (600-800 words; due at noon, 10/1), evaluating (600-800 words; due at noon, 10/15), synthesizing (800-1000 words; due at noon, 11/5), and arguing (800-1000 words; due at noon, 11/19). Each composition accounts for 15% of the final grade. Please send each composition to your instructor on time. Each composition should be typed (12-point word font; Times New Roman; 1.5 spacing; name and student ID visible on each page; include word count at the end of the final page). The specific requirements for each composition will be announced a week prior to each deadline. Note: Plagiarism is not tolerated. Plagiarized compositions will not be corrected nor given a grade. Late submissions will still be corrected, but the grade will be reduced by 50%.
3.
Interview presentation
15%
Many jobs require one to write. Of course, writing in different professions may look quite different: it could be as simple as writing short notes on standardized forms; it could be as complex as writing research papers, controversial issues, literary pieces, or project proposals and reports. For this assignment, you are asked, in pairs, to interview someone whose job requires regular and extensive writing **primarily in English**. This person you choose to interview could be, for example, a researcher, journalist, columnist, textbook writer, novelist, blogger, or a specific type of content creator. In the 20-minute presentation, please cover the following aspects: 1) an introduction of the person you interviewed, 2) a description of the job that the person does, 3) what the job routine is like (e.g., daily, weekly, and/or monthly routine), 4) what types of writing are required in this job (e.g., does it involve summarizing, evaluating, synthesizing, and/or arguing?), 5) what is considered “good” writing in that particular job (e.g., provide examples), 6) what qualities and requirements are needed for this kind of job, and 7) what writing and career advice does the person have for students who are majoring in English. You may also include any additional parts that are interesting in the interview in your presentation.
